for the love of; blazers

(Left to right: Old Navy, Forever 21 and Value Village)

The boyfriend blazer trend has been around since last season, and I’ve been on the lookout for the “perfect” one ever since. I’ve gotten three so far, but none of which is “perfect” in my opinion. There’s always something that just doesn’t feel right. (Not the best quality in regards to the pictures but I’m too lazy to take new ones.)

Detail shots of the one from Old Navy and Value Village. I did have a shot for the Forever 21 blazer but it didn’t turn out that nice so I decided to abandon that picture. My favourite of the three would have to be the Forever 21 one, even though it’s kind of boxy. I like it because it doesn’t look as feminine as some other ‘boyfriend blazers’. It’s more androgynous, which makes it easier for me to put together an outfit to match the blazer. I haven’t worn the Value Village one yet, I don’t know what to wear with it just because it’s not the most conventional colour.

(A more androgynous blazer; no real definition in the curves and it’s more boxy)

Here’s a guideline that will help you pick a blazer according to your body shape:

  • Pear: A shorter blazer will give you the perfect proportion and your curves will be less noticeable. Blazers that sit at your hip will highlight your hips and butt, which may not be where you’re trying to bring attention to.
  • Inverted triangle: You can wear a long blazer that flares out a bit at the hem which will complement your figure nicely.
  • Hourglass: Any type of blazer will fit your figure beautifully, just think of  your body shape before choosing one.
  • Apple: Wearing a darker coloured blazer will give the allusion of a slim upper body.

How to wear a boyfriend blazer:

  • Make it oversized: As the name suggests a “boyfriend blazer” should be worn a sizer bigger than your usual size.
  • Roll up the sleeves: This is probably the most crucial element of wearing a boyfriend blazer. Pushing up or rolling your sleeves helps balance out the fit of the blazer.
  • Colour: If you’re adventurous and like colour, wearing a blazer that’s not black will be the perfect focal point of your outfit.
  • Shorts, leggings, mini dresses and jeans: Boyfriend blazers look great with wet look leggings, or a very sexy mini dress that shows off your legs to balance out the look of the blazer. It also would look great with a pair of jeans, or a pair of shorts to make the blazer look more feminine.
  • Wear a belt: If you’d like to try new things, you can take a thick belt and put it on over your boyfriend blazer to create a more feminine and sleek look. (Refer to the left picture above)

What’s your favourite kind of blazer?

Hopefully boyfriend blazers for females don’t cost $400+ like guy ones.

Boyfriend blazers for females are much less cheaper if you know where to look. Obviously there are high end ones that cost as much as male blazers!
